1. Take good care of your skin. Nourish, hydrate and exfoliate regularly to stave-off the signs of aging. Remember that the better your skin looks, the less need for heavy make-ups and primping.
2. Plump-up your lips. They can appear thinner in your later years and the secret to keeping them full looking is a little liner (about 2 shades darker than your natural lip color) followed by a light coat of shiny gloss.
3. Use an eye pencil. Liquid liners are dark and dramatic and tend to exaggerate fine lines. Use a soft brown to highlight your lash-line on the bottom and wisp a line on your upper outer lids away from your eyes, up toward your hairline to open and brighten them.
4. Avoid bold colors on your lips. Although it's too tempting for a lot of older women to resist, a dark red or bright pink actually accentuates the fine lines that form around your mouth as you age. Don't fall into this trap, no matter how much you love the colors!
5. Use a lash curler. Over-doing it with the mascara is a no-no for most women past the age of 40. Invest in a good curler that will make your lashes look fuller and darker without all the goop. Since lashes tend to thin with age, mascara doesn't work out too well anyway.
6. Highlight and blend with blush. The trick professional make-up artists suggests for women of any age is to lightly apply the blush to the apples of the cheeks and blend so that it looks like you're not wearing any! Avoid sweeping the brush up your cheek bone with a lot of color.
7. Make your eyes shimmer with color. Beautiful eyes are really the main attraction of any face, so use the colors that work best for you. Contrast blue eyes with brown shadow, and brown eyes with green, blending in an upward motion.
8. Use a high-quality primer. This liquid magic helps even skin tone and fill out small pores and other imperfections and will actually keep your make-up working longer for you. For the best results, use the primer after moisturizer, but before foundation.
9. Add illumination to your beauty routine. Highlighters, bronzers and other products that illuminate can instantly take years off of your looks. Invest in an illuminator from a trusted company, even if it's a little more expensive; the results will be well worth it.
10. Don't ever over do your look. Even a woman of 20 can look foolish when her make-up is layered on too thick or really pronounced, so avoid going this route. Sometimes as we age we want to compensate with more make-up, but the opposite is what will actually improve your looks.
With a few tricks up your sleeve, you'll now be using make-up to look even more fabulous than ever before. Experiment and exercise moderation until you find the perfect look for you and have fun being a girl, no matter how old you are!
