Local Internet Marketing Company Ajax Union Uses Facebook to Join Fight Against Breast Cancer
In affiliation with Google and the Susan G. Komen for the Cure’s Pink Pin Initiative, search engine agency Ajax Union has developed a Facebook campaign to raise funds for and awareness about the growing presence of breast cancer in the United States.
In an effort to promote awareness about the rise in cases of breast cancer in the United States, Ajax Union - a business marketing company online at http://www.AjaxUnion.com - has taken part in the Pink Pin Initiative, a partnership between Google and breast cancer awareness group Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
According to Breastcancer.org, approximately 1 in 8 U.S. women will develop breast cancer in the course of their lifetimes. To raise awareness of this staggering statistic, Ajax Union created "1 in 8," a Facebook campaign in which the internet marketing company will donate $1 for each new fan its Facebook page receives before the end of November, as well as an extra $1 for every eighth fan, up to $100.
“People don’t always realize just how widely the effects of breast cancer can reach. Anyone could develop it - a relative, a friend, a neighbor. It doesn’t discriminate. We heard about the Pink Pink Initiative and thought that would be the perfect way to do our part to help,” said Sarah Mogin, head of social online marketing and PR at Ajax Union.
Breastcancer.org also reports that over the course of 2011, there have been over 2.6 million breast cancer survivors in America. Ajax Union is hoping to do its part to raise that number.
"Being one of the first 1,000 New York businesses to register for the Google Pink Pin cause, we really wanted to inspire and rally everyone in our network to join the fight against breast cancer," said Elizabeth Apfelbaum, a Vice President at the internet marketing company.
As seen on the Pink Pin map at http://www.PinkPin.com, the majority of participating businesses are located in New York City, although companies throughout the country have also stepped up to participate. A handful of businesses are participating in other countries as well, including Mexico, Chile, and Saudi Arabia. In the first 24 hours alone 300 businesses signed up to take part in the Pink Pin Initiative.
Registered companies have an extra incentive to raise funds - Google has promised to match up to $50,000 of all donations made by Ajax Union SEO NY and the other participating business, bringing the projected grand total to $100,000. Consumers as well as businesses are encouraged to contribute to the Pink Pink Initiative as well, whether by donating in-store at participating business or over the web.
Ajax Union offers a number of internet marketing strategies for small businesses, including Search Engine Optimization (SEO), Pay-Per-Click Management (PPC), email online marketing, and PR. Russian hackers target US system
FOREIGN hackers have broken into a water plant control system in Illinois and damaged a water pump in what may be the first reported case of a cyber-attack on a critical US computer system, according to an industry expert.
On November 8, a municipal water employee in Illinois noticed problems with the city's water pump control system, and a technician determined the system had been remotely hacked into from a computer in Russia, said Joe Weiss, an industry security expert who obtained a copy of an Illinois government report on the incident. The city affected was Springfield, according to the US Department of Homeland Security.
Problems with the system had been observed for two to three months and recently the system ''would power on and off, resulting in the burnout of a water pump'', the November 10 report from the statewide terrorism and intelligence centre stated, according to Mr Weiss. ''This is a big deal,'' he said. The report said it was unknown how many other systems might be affected.
It said hackers apparently broke into a software company's database and retrieved usernames and passwords of various control systems that run water plant computer equipment.
Using that data, they were able to hack into the Illinois plant, Mr Weiss said.
It is not the first time that two-step technique - hack into a security company in order to gain the keys to enter other companies or entities - has been detected.
Earlier this year, hackers believed to be working from China stole sensitive data that provides secure remote computer access to government agencies, defence contractors and other companies around the world.
The Department of Homeland Security said it and the FBI were investigating the Illinois incident.
''At this time there is no credible corroborated data that indicates a risk to critical infrastructure entities or a threat to public safety,'' spokesman Peter Boogaard said.
According to the report obtained by Mr Weiss, the network intrusion of the software company ''is the same method of attack recently used against a Massachusetts Institute of Technology server'' used to ''aid and initiate an attack on other websites''.more information...

Apple iPhone 4 Bumper Giveaway Timeline Doesn't Add Up
Apple launched the iPhone 4 Case Program app in the App Store a few days ago, and is expected to invest somewhere in the neighborhood of $175 million on the free bumper program aimed at reluctantly addressing reception issues with the iPhone 4. There is something that doesn't add up, though, about the timing that makes the program seem like a bait-and-switch designed to brush the problem under the rug.
After weeks of stubborn denial from Apple that a problem exists at all, Apple arranged a major press conference to respond to concerns. After about 15 minutes of explaining that all smartphones have the same issues and that there really isn't anything wrong with the iPhone 4, Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced a plan to address the issue.
Jobs said "We care about every user. And, we're not going to stop until every one of those is happy." So, free bumper cases for all! Or, as Jobs put it "Pick a case--zoom! We'll send it right off to you."
Jobs followed the free bumper plan announcement by reiterating that Apple is waiving its standard restocking fee and will provide users a full refund--if they return the iPhone 4 undamaged within 30 days of purchase. This is where the timeline math starts to get a little fuzzy.
It's awesome that Apple is granting full refunds, but you might not get a bumper in time to determine if it's an effective solution or not before the 30 day deadline expires. And, by the way, just because Apple is willing to give you a full refund doesn't mean that AT&T is willing to surrender your contractual obligation.
The estimated shipping timeline on all of the bumpers and cases available from the Apple program is three to five weeks. AT&T contracts aside, it seems that Apple should provide a 30 day window from the time the bumper is shipped to give users adequate time to work with the Band-Aid solution and determine if it's effective enough to warrant keeping the device.
Or, if the various issues affecting the iPhone 4 truly impact as small a percentage of the iPhone 4 population as Jobs suggests, why not simply take the iPhone 4 back and exchange it for one of the perfectly awesome ones? Assuming that the reception issues affect less than ten percent of the iPhone 4s, I like my odds exchanging the device for one that works rather than a duct tape and chewing gum fix for my defective one.
Let's sum up. The iPhone 4 is magical and awesome except for some virtually irrelevant percentage of apparently very vocal users. Apple is magnanimously offering to waive the restocking fee and provide a full refund for dissatisfied users within 30 days. It is further altruistically providing free bumpers to users having reception issues--but you probably won't receive it until after the 30-day return window expires.more information...

Apple squeezes the reception out of Nokia N97 mini
Apple seem keen to prove other smartphones have the same reception attenuation as the iPhone 4. And they are getting back with a video of Nokia N97 mini that suffers from the same grip of death as the iPhone.
Back at Apple Antennagate press conference last week Apple failed to show a faulty Nokia handset (probably because Nokia has a smaller smartphone market share in the US), but nonetheless Nokia came forward with a statement on the matter last weekend.
So Apple is keen to strike back at Nokia and the N97 mini is the next victim of Apple's accusations.
As the following video reveals, the S60-based smartphone loses signal if you cover its antenna with a hand. As a result, the N97 mini drops from 7 to only 2 bars. The question remains though - would that drop be bad enough to cause a dropped call as it is on the iPhone 4?

Google Launches New Image Search Ads
Google began rolling out a new design for its image search today, and along with that came a new ad format. The format is called (appropriately) Image Search Ads.
"These ads appear only on Google Images, and they let you include a thumbnail image alongside your lines of text," explains Google Images Product Manager Nate Smith. "we hope they’re a useful way to reach folks who are specifically looking for images."
Advertisers can review specific performance metrics for their ads on Google Images. They are priced the same as standard AdWords ads with cost-per-click pricing.
Advertisers can create the ads using Google's Display Ad Builder. They can use a template to pair relevant ad text with targeted images.
To create an Image Search Ad, simply go to your AdWords account, select the campaign or ad group where you want to create it, click the Ads tab, select Display ad builder from the "new ad" drop-down menu, then select "templates for search" and choose Image Search Ad.
Google recommends that advertisers create a new ad group so that they can target keywords, adjust bids, and track performance for ads specifically on Google Images.

Half of social networkers worried about privacy: poll
Half of Americans who have a profile on social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace are worried about their privacy, according to a new poll.
The Marist survey showed that people over 60 are the most worried about privacy, and women are more concerned than men.
"We're in an era of information. Some people are concerned, reluctant and skittish about the extent of online information. There's a privacy element that some people feel is getting lost," said Dr. Lee Miringoff, director of the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion.
Privacy on social networking sites is an ongoing issue. Facebook recently changed its policies to give users more control over how much information from their profiles is public following protests from privacy watchdogs and consumers about the difficulty in changing default account settings.
"It doesn't take much to increase the concern factor and when headlines start blaring about breakdowns in privacy, that goes a long way to raising people's concerns," Miringoff added.
The poll showed that 27 percent of the 1,004 people who took part in the survey were concerned about privacy on social networking websites, and a further 23 percent were very concerned.
Older Americans are more worried about privacy, he said, because social networking websites do not come as naturally to them as to younger people who have a more carefree attitude about the sites and privacy.
Overall, 43 percent of Americans said they keep in touch via social networking websites such as Facebook, MySpace and LinkedIn. Forty percent of men, and 45 percent of women, said they had a profile on a networking site.more information...

Apple calls an iPhone 4 press conference, iOS 4.1 closing in
It was about time. Apple got quite a hit by the wave of user discontent about the iPhone 4 antenna issues. It's been 3 weeks since the premiere of iPhone 4, but it is tomorrow that Apple will confess. Or not.
And this is all we know so far. Apple sent invitations to select press representatives for tomorrow's press conference. It will start 10:00 AM Pacific Time (6 PM European GMT) and will surly concern iPhone 4. Whether Apple will admit the issues, offer free bumper cases or start a recall campaign - nobody knows. But this sounds surely as the first step into the right direction.
Meanwhile iOS 4.1 beta is already available to developers and here is a glimpse of what we should expect.
The reception bars now make use of both a new formula and a new size. The first reports show that a full-bars situation is now a rare event. The bars are also a bit taller than before, which sounds like a clever mind trick.
The Game Center has been redesigned too. It's now painted in green with yellow buttons.
Finally, there are some rumors of watermarking of jailbroken devices. If your iPhone 4 has joined the pirateland, it will have some watermark showing onscreen all the time. Don't worry just yet though, there's still no public jailbreak solution and it's all just a rumor for now. more information...

'Google Me' site may be in the works
If online reports are to be believed, Google could be cooking up a rival for Facebook -- and bringing the maker of popular social games like "FarmVille" with them.
Google Games, built around some sort of partnership with casual-gaming company Zynga, is in the works and would be part of a larger social network called Google Me, according to technology blog Tech Crunch.
Statements from notable internet players, including Digg founder Kevin Rose and a former Facebook chief technical officer, have suggested in recent weeks that the search-engine giant is working on a social network geared toward rivaling Facebook.
TechCrunch this weekend reported that unnamed sources said Google has invested between $100 and $200 million in Zynga, the maker of successful online social games like "FarmVille" and "Mafia Wars."
The investment part of the deal was confirmed last month and a "larger strategic project" is still in the works, according to that report.
A Zynga spokeswoman said Monday that the company has no comment on the reports. A Google spokesman referred questions to the company's media-relations e-mail account, which did not respond to inquiries.
The popularity of Zynga's games -- more than 50 million people play them on any given day, according to developerAnalytics -- could bring considerable heft to any online networking or gaming project Google launched.
The obvious question then would become whether the "Farmville" maker would pull its games from Facebook. That would be a tall order considering the success those games have seen.
